Predictive Analytics with R in Power BI
Power BI reports are typically used for descriptive analysis: a historical look of what has happened. But what if your report could visualize what is likely to happen and recommend what you can do about it now? This session will cover how to shift from descriptive to predictive analysis and leverage the power of machine learning to enhance your business intelligence solutions. The basics and best practices of predictive modeling will be introduced, and these concepts will be applied to create three predictive models in R using three different techniques. We will then walk through the three different ways to integrate the predictive power of these models into a Power BI report.

During this Networking Break, stop by the Supporting Partner exhibit table in the expo area from 2:05 to 2:10 to hear a 5 minute presentation by Kwixand Solutions Inc.: Do I Already Have Useful Data? - Through a case study Brian Paquette, President and Founder of Kwixand Solutions, will show how Microsoft tools were used to quickly create relevant information from data in an existing SQL database - data that had been collected for years without key and relevant information exposed. The sales data for a large geographical region soon showed insights into products, local requirements, and individual sales person trends. Perhaps the first place we can take our clients is to existing data stores, as opposed to relying solely on large, expensive, and time-consuming projects to only build entire new data stores.

Governance and administration of a Power Platform solution in the Enterprise
PowerApps, Common Data Service and Microsoft Flow make up the cornerstones of a high-productivity application development platform from Microsoft called the Power Platform. This platform is used by Microsoft to build their own 1st party applications Dynamics 365 for Sales, Service, Field Service, Marketing and Talent and enables organizations within Enterprise to build their own business applications with low or no-code. This session is targeted toward the enterprise application administrator responsible for planning, securing, deploying, and supporting applications built on the Power platform. The goal of the session is to help you understand what currently is in your environment, how to proactively plan for applications being developed and deployed and finally how to handle day to day administrative tasks to manage deployments.

60 minutes for a lifetime of impressive Power Query Skills
Power Query is our favorite go-to technique for data extraction and mangling. Its advantages are numerous: it integrates with Excel and Power BI, can be reused in Analysis Services, Dataflows, Azure Data Factory and even Flow.
It is easy to learn yet allows both novice and advanced users to deliver value with a few mouse clicks.
The downside of this accessibility is that users can easily create queries that may lead to high maintenance costs, low performance, high system loads and increase the risk of failing, reducing the value.
This session takes 60 minutes to show how applying specific patterns, techniques and best practices allow you to create query logic that is more reliable, more performant and easier to maintain.
The attendant will be able to avoid common pitfalls and build Power Query solutions that are fit for enterprise level application.

Integrating Power BI and Azure Data Lake with dataflows and CDM Folders
Power BI dataflows are powered by Azure Data Lake Storage gen2, but by default the Power BI service manages the storage details. This is great for self-service data preparation and analyst-driven reuse, but Power BI doesn’t stop there. Through its support for CDM Folders, Power BI dataflows integrate with a wide range of Azure data services.

In this session, Power BI program manager Matthew Roche will explore integration scenarios between Power BI dataflows, Azure Data Lake Storage gen2, and additional Azure services such as Azure Data Factory. If you want to bridge the worlds of IT and self-service, and to enable easy reuse in both directions, this is a session you to not want to miss.

Best Practices (Introductory) when writing DAX Measures
Creating a simple DAX Measure is quick and easy, but once you go beyond the basics the code gets more complex. Understanding what you wrote 6 months ago can be a major challenge. What if you inherited the code from someone who no longer works for the company?
Microsoft is continuously updating DAX, but the best practices from years ago remain the standard for writing DAX coding. In this session, participants will learn what best practices will improve readability, minimize duplication of coding, and improve performance. By following these best practices, your code will be easier to maintain, more reliable and look professional.

Power BI Report Server for Developers and Power Users
In this session we will open a Live Power BI Dashboard which collects and shows survey responses about level of expertise in PBIRS and favorite topics to be discussed. The dashboard works on top of a streaming dataset and I will ask you to answer questions through a Survey developed with Microsoft Forms; when you submit the form, your answers will be shown in the Live Power BI dashboard.
This is the magic of using Microsoft Flow, as an automation tool, between Forms and Power BI. This is a smart way to kick off the session because I will be able to understand your overall level of expertise and, at the same time, I will slightly customize the flow of the presentation based on the topics that you would like to hear the most about. We will start then exploring Power BI Report Server more in details.
In this session I’m going to discuss basic topics like “different editions / licensing for PBIRS” and “branding for PBIRS”, and more advanced topics such as “Configuring Advanced Options through SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio)”, how to “Embed PBIRS reports”, how to “monitor Scheduled Refreshes”, how to “query the Report Server catalog” and use the “REST-API”. I’ll spend a bit of time talking about “PBIRS security” and “custom roles in PBIRS”. Eventually, I’ll reserve time for a QA session.
The session will follow a short slide-deck presentation and jump quickly on live demo examples.
